- The North American symbol for OK is considered vulgar in Spain.
- Many Spanish businesses will close down between 2 and 5 p.m. for a siesta, and then finish their work day at 8 or 9 p.m.

In light of the Dec. 25 incident on a U.S.-bound flight, the U.S. Transportation Security Administration is mandating that every individual flying into the United States from anywhere in the world traveling from or through nations that are state sponsors of terrorism or other countries of interest will be required to go through enhanced screening effective Jan. 4. The directive also increases the use of enhanced screening technologies and mandates threat-based and random screening for passengers on U.S. bound international flights.
In addition, the Canadian government has banned all carry-on bags for passengers traveling to the U.S. because new screening requirements are causing excessive delays. Only exceptions are purses, cameras, coats, laptops, musical instruments, medical devices and items for baby care.
Regarding domestic U.S. flights, the TSA Web site states, "(U.S. airports) have the ability to quickly implement additional screening measures, including explosive-detection canine teams, law enforcement officers, gate screening, behavior detection and other measures both seen and unseen. Passengers should not expect to see the same thing at every airport." At this time, security checkpoint requirements for passengers departing U.S. airports remain the same and do not need to do anything differently. Additional security measures may be noticed at the airport.

Cathy Greteman Speaks at China Leisure Travel Summit
NTA Chairman and CEO Cathy Greteman spoke on the current state of Chinese inbound travel to the United States during the China Leisure Travel Summit in Beijing, China held Dec. 10-11, 2009.
Cathy spoke about the Memorandum of Understanding signed between China and the United States as well as the MOU between China and Canada. She also spoke on the China Inbound program that was created by NTA in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Commerce and China. "Never before have Chinese leisure travelers been able to travel so freely within our borders," said Greteman in her letter about the trip in the January issue of Courier magazine.
The China Leisure Travel Summit, organized by Noppen, was attended by international senior executives, top-level Chinese government officials, chief strategy officers and leading tourism directors. The event's focus was on providing an exclusive B2B platform for international outbound travel service providers and Chinese travel agencies.

Tourism Cares, NTA's official philanthropy, has chosen a site of historic significance in San Francisco Bay as its 8th Annual Tourism Cares for America volunteer project. Angel Island is located in the heart of San Francisco Bay and is referred to as "the Ellis Island of the West Coast." The annual volunteer event will take place Friday, June 11. Cruising and NTA's upcoming MONTAGE event in Seville, Spain, are in the spotlight in the first issue of Courier for 2010. Articles on the rich history of the British Isles and Ireland as well as tour options in North America's Great Lakes Region kick off the destination section in the January issue, which also includes pieces on Alaska, California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. In the business section, MONTAGE Chair Larry Friedman shares his thoughts on why he's excited about this international event while other articles focus on social media and how you can help fight global climate change.
